Derby Player Profile – Gwenifear

Roller Derby Superstar GwenifearDerby Name:

Derby Team:
Miami’s Vice City Rollers

How long have you been skating?
I used to skate for fun when I was a kid, but I didn’t put skates on for almost 17 years before I started skating with MVCR in September of 2011.  So it’s been a solid 4-5 months of skating for me  =)

Why did you get involved in roller derby?
A friend of my boyfriend’s invited us to an event that the team was participating in and they were very convincing that I should come to the open house and try out.  So I did!!

How often do you practice?
There are 5 practices offered every week.  I try to make it to at least 3 practices a week.  I work pretty far from where we practice, so it’s difficult to make it to more than that.

What Pads do you use?
I use triple 8 wrist guards and 187 knee pads and 187 skate elbow pads. I’m really glad that my first derby purchase were these awesomely huge knee pads because I fall a lot!

What Helmet do you use?
triple 8

What skates do you use?
I am still breaking in my new Reidell Wickeds and so far they have been treating me really well.

Where did your nick name come from?
It just came to me one day in a fairy tale daydream……

What is your favourite part about being a Roller girl?
Going fast!!  And the camaraderie that all the girls have with one another.

Any top tips for up and coming Derby Superstars?
Practice, practice, practice!!!  The more you skate the more comfortable you are.  It’s hard to get over that initial hesitation and fear about getting hurt.  Just keep skating and keep training and you will do great! Oh and buy alot of epsom salt, you will need it.
