Derby Player Profile – Tallygator
Derby Team: Miami’s Vice City Rollers
Occupation: Personal Assistant
How long have you been skating? All my life! I was a rink rat growing up, and when I wasn’t able to go to the rink I would always skate at parks or in the neighbourhood.
Why did you get involved in roller derby? As an avid skater my dream was always to be able to compete on my skates, and this was the perfect opportunity that I could not pass up! The athleticism of the game and the tough competition excites me!
How often do you practice? I try and skate as much as possible, I attend a minimum of three practices a week. Each practice is two and a half hrs long, that includes 30 minutes of off-skates training.
What Pads do you use? I have 187 Killer Pads protecting my knees and wrists, and Reactor elbow pads.
What Helmet do you use? I think I have a Triple Eight helmet, but I can’t tell anymore because it is covered in stickers and paint!
What skates do you use? The Reidell 965’s with a PowerDyne Revenge plate. I love my skates, they are so comfortable!
Where did your nick name come from? When I moved back home my friends on the league I started skating with at the time began calling me Tally, short for Tallahassee (where I initially started playing roller derby) and since I hadn’t settled on a name (at least one that was not already taken) it stuck! I added ‘gator’ to my name, since I’m a huge reptile lover, when we started our league in Miami, I like that it complimented my hometown.
What is your favourite part about being a Roller girl? Being able to skate and hit other people!
Any top tips for up and coming Derby Superstars? Invest in really well padded knee pads, your knees will thank you! Don’t give up until it’s over! And have fun out there on the track!
