Derby Skater Profile – Evil Lucia: 46n2

Roller Derby Skater - Evil Lucia 46n2Derby Name: Evil Lucia: 46n2

Derby Team: Hard Knox Roller Girls: Knoxville, TN, USA

Occupation: full-time doctoral student

How long have you been skating? I’ve been playing derby 2 years

Why did you get involved in roller derby? Full contact sport on wheels?! How could I NOT get involved?

How often do you practice? In a week I attend 2 league practices and 1 speed skating practice. I also cross-train with biking, running, and yoga.

What Pads do you use? All my pads are Pro-tec. I’m still on my first pair of knee pads!

What Helmet do you use? Pro-tec helmet.

What skates do you use? Currently, I have Riedell Minx.

What were your first pair of skates? The plastic blue and yellow kiddie skates that you put on over your shoes.

Where did your nick name come from? The players, like the sport of roller derby, must always be in a state of changing, adapting, and growing in order to evolve. I don’t want to forget that.

What is your favourite part about being a Roller girl? I have played many sports in the past. Roller Derby is by far the most fun! The bond I share with this league of women is something that is unparalleled. The aggression and the smoothness of the roll consumes me. I love to play!!!

Any top tips for up and coming Derby Superstars? Buy equipment that suites your needs, don’t worry about what everyone else is using. Watch Championship DVDs and take notes. Be sure to give attention to your hamstrings and inner thighs, not just your quads.
