Derby Skater Profile – Mad Ash

Roller Derby Skater - Mad AshDerby Name:
Mad Ash

Derby Team: Grand Raggidy Roller Girls – All Stars

Occupation: Laboratory Analyst

How long have you been skating? I’ve been skating for just over two years

Why did you get involved in roller derby? I had just moved to Michigan and was looking for something to do in my spare time that would keep me active. I was familiar with roller derby at the time, so I began looking for leagues in my area as soon as I had settled in.

How often do you practice? I generally attend 2-3 practices a week, and I try to run or bike on my off days.

What Pads do you use? 187s for my knees, and Protecs for my elbow and wrists

What Helmet do you use? Triple Eight Helmet

What skates do you use? Reidell 265 boots, and standard issue nylon plates (no complaints!)

What were your first pair of skates? The same pair I’m currently rolling on! I bought them used from a friend who plays for the Chicago Outfit. (Thanks, Erin Watershow!) Some might argue that I’m due for an upgrade, but honestly, they’ve been working really well for me, and I’m quite attached to them.

Where did your nick name come from? It’s just an abbreviated version of my real name, which admittedly is not very clever. It was easy though, and it stuck, so Mad Ash it remains!

What is your favourite part about being a Roller girl?  The fact that I now have 45 amazing friends who I’d do anything for! Seriously though, I’ve met some of the most incredible men and women through Grand Raggidy who will be lifelong pals, without a doubt.

Any top tips for up and coming Derby Superstars? Be prepared to work really hard if you want to shine in this sport – Cross training is a must! Set small goals for yourself every time you lace up and do everything in your power to make sure you reach them. Don’t forget to have fun!
