Derby Skater Profile – Space Riot
Derby Team: Hard Knox Roller Girls
Knoxville, TN, U.S.A.
Occupation: Accounting assistant
How long have you been skating? 1.5 yrs
Why did you get involved in roller derby? I grew up playing sports and have always enjoyed being active and competitive. As an adult, I found myself not as active as I used to be. A friend of mine kept telling me how much I’d enjoy roller derby, so I finally checked out an HKRG bout. I instantly fell in love, and I went to the very next practice. I’ve been around ever since.
How often do you practice? 2-3 times/wk
What Pads do you use? I use Protec pads. Before derby, I skateboarded for many years, and these were always the pads I used. I like their affordability and durability.
What Helmet do you use? I wear an S-ONE Premium helmet. I really like that the helmet’s pads are wrapped with terry cloth to absorb sweat. They are also removable so you can wash them.
What skates do you use? Riedell Minx Skates
What were your first pair of skates? Riedell Vixen Skates
Where did your nick name come from? It’s actually the name of an album by the band, Pegasi51. Besides being my favorite album, I thought the name well-suited me because I can be a little spacey at times. I also have a wild and crazy side.
What is your favourite part about being a Roller girl? My favorite part about being a roller girl is getting the chance to meet and befriend various individuals from all walks of life. I have made so many new friends from playing roller derby, whether they be skaters, refs, fans, volunteers… I like the feeling of being a part of a team, and I get really pumped when I hear people cheering for me.
Any top tips for up and coming Derby Superstars? Push yourself every day. Set goals for yourself and work towards them. Roller derby is a very aggressive sport. It’s physically and mentally demanding. Cross-train to build and maintain your endurance: run, jump rope, swim, bike. Eat healthy, and get adequate sleep. Hydrate. Keep your head up, you can do it!
