Vamperia 77 – Pads for Starters
When setting out to buy my first set of pads we were advised by our coach to spend more on them than anything else to begin with as safety was the most important thing!
I, as most of our new team did, decided to go for the triple pack pads though, the favourite being the SFR white ones with pink stitching for £24.99. We soon realised that this was most certainly not the best option we could have gone for! The knee and elbow pads offered very little protection. The first thing I upgraded was the knee pads. I went for a pair of TSG All Terrains. They are very good and I managed to get a brand new pair on eBay for £14, (apparently normal rrp is £35), they didn’t break the bank but are very comfortable and do an excellent job of protecting my knee caps!
I thought the elbow pads were okay until we started practicing the arm whip techniques. Our guest skater/trainer on one training session was Vigour Mortis of the London Roller Girls; I took a whip from her and was propelled so fast I couldn’t take the corner in time! I managed to fall with the 4 point fall but my elbow pads couldn’t handle it and slipped right up my arm leaving my elbow totally exposed to the mean hard floor!! I got my first proper Derby bruise and although I was very proud of it I thought I’d add Elbow pads to my Christmas wish list! As TSG had served me well on my knees I got some All Terrain elbow pads to match. Christmas Day = Elbow pad prezzie from the Boyfriend = one very happy trainee Derby Girl!
I am still using the SFR wrist guards and haven’t had any need to upgrade them as yet; they seem to do the job at the moment although I’m not playing in bouts yet. I’ll probably upgrade these when that time comes.
