Roller Derby Profile – Graphic Content
Derby Name:

IRL: Billy Nation

Derby Team:
NSO! That’s a team right? (we’re undefeated!)
Memphis Roller Derby (MRD)
Occupation:
Derby? NSO usually I’m the jam timer (I was made for that)
How long have you been skating?
NSO Non-skating Official. Skated and rinks and what not, but nothing like what these other great folk have under their belts. I joined MRD in winter 2010.
Why did you get involved in roller derby?
Lots of reasons that boil down to art and social nature.
I love the DIY (do-it-yourself) spirit of derby, it’s underground roots and up and coming nature, the derby attitude/style, and the people are great.
I started by watching WHIP IT and my love of that film evolved into a personal project where I did a 3-piece spray paint series then 20+ vector portrait pieces of local skaters. That didn’t fulfill my personal demand for derby, so I just signed up one day.
How often do you practice?
Usually once a week with an amazing crew.
Where did your nick name come from?
It’s multi layered!
Graphic Content (art) = I’m a graphic designer by trade and the content part rounds out the idea. Graphic based content. It’s also the name of one of my favorite gallery showings.
Graphic Content (vulgar) = I’m a foul mouth lilly liver cod fish fuckin pisser. Er, I’m often very verbose about my opinion when I have one and tend to find myself without a filter. Graphic Content, like you see on packaging labels sometimes (packaging labels being another reference to my graphic designer nature).
What is your favourite part about being a NSO Dude?
My fav part? Probably the people, love meeting and greeting new folk. Learning who they are and sharing this experience with them.
Any top tips for up and coming Derby Superstars?
Don’t squibble around if you’re thinking of joining. Just fuckin’ do it! We need folk, we are happy to meet new folk and the sooner you start the better off, derby-wise, you will be. No time is too late, but don’t put it off forever.
