Why did you get involved in roller derby?
My friend said come skating its fun. I attended thinking I was going to a roller disco. Was a bit gobsmacked when I realised what it actually involved, however was bitten by the derby bug from the 1st night.
How often do you practice?
Twice a week and I try to fit in an outside skate if possible.
What Pads do you use?
Tena Lady . I find they give the best protection. Only joking . 187 killer Pro Knee pads. 187 wrist guards Triple Eight Elbow guards.
What Helmet do you use?
Red Bullet helmet. This is the next piece of kit on my list to change.
What skates do you use?
Riedell Vixens. I am still getting used to these.
What were your first pair of skates?
Riedell Volts, which I love and have kept for outside skating.
Where did your nick name come from?
Although Hayle Seize Her is my derby named which my team mate Ceri (Bumblebee) suggested, as it’s a play on my real name, I am more commonly known as nana to the team. One of my team mates partners said I reminded him of Nanageddon, an angry nana, because when we go out I am always telling the girls to behave and giving them disapproving looks apparently! So nana seems to have stuck.
What is your favourite part about being a Roller girl?
My team mates. I’ve never before been involved in a team sport . The friends I have made are amazing. The support that is given by the team is just fantastic. Knowing that your team mates have your back is an awesome feeling. The support extends outside of the derby world as well.
Any top tips for up and coming Derby Superstars?
The basics are so important. Being able to fall and bounce back up quickly, the ability to stop and turn quickly will help you so much. Most importantly enjoy!
