Roller Derby Skater – Onya Assyabitch

Derby Name:
Onya Assyabitch

Derby Team:
Hot wheel roller derby

Occupation:
Counsellor

How long have you been skating?
7 months

Why did you get involved in roller derby?
A friend of mine originally started with the idea and I kinda jumped on her bandwagon! I was looking for a fun way to exercise and lose weight and since I hate gyms I figured roller derby could be the thing for me! She found Hot Wheel and after lots of anxiety we both decided to take the plunge!

How often do you practice?
Hot wheel train hard 3 times a week, I try my best to get to 2 out of 3 as a minimum but balancing home, work and skating is hard sometimes!

What Pads do you use?
Anarchy elbow pads and 187 killer pro derby knee pads with gaskets. It’s like falling on to clouds!

What Helmet do you use?
I aren’t sure, it’s from a set I bought from the coach to start me off but it protects me noggin so I’m happy!

What skates do you use?
Reno professionals with grease green wheels, they’re the sniz!

What were your first pair of skates?
My first ever were my little pony – white leather with a pony on the ankle. Sadly they hadn’t survived my childhood so i went with reidell volts (with incredibly wide wheels!) they lasted me a couple of months but I upgraded to the renos and stuck some outdoor wheels on the reidells

Where did your nick name come from?
It just came to me in a (rare)moment of enlightenment!

What is your favourite part about being a Roller girl?
I love the diversity of the team and I love the support we give each other and knowing that my team mates are there whenever.

Any top tips for up and coming Derby Superstars?
If you struggle, share with your team mates. When you achieve, share with your team mates. Some people won’t ‘get’ roller derby and why you rejoice in your giant bruises. Your team mates will!
