Roller Derby Skater – Rebel Rebel

Roller Derby SKater - Rebel Rebel

Derby Name:
Rebel Rebel #15

Derby Team:
London Rockin’ Rollers

How long have you been skating?
Since January 2011, but spent a lot of my teens on skates

Why did you get involved in roller derby?
I was looking for a new team sport and this encompassed so many things I liked: skating, brilliant women, athleticism, theatrical boutfits and the fact my league taught us to skate derby from scratch.

How often do you practice?
Three times a week plus as much outside skating as I can grab and I also cycle and do strengthening exercises on non-training days.

What Pads do you use?
187s. They’re massive and do their job well.

What Helmet do you use?
Bern Barclay in red. It’s good for people with glasses like me. It’s also my cycle helmet and has an interchangeable peak.

What skates do you use?
Sure grip Rebels, hope to upgrade one day but can’t afford anything more at the moment. They took forever to wear in.

What were your first pair of skates?
Aside from the Red suede with silver star disco skates I had when I was a kid, my first derby skates were Volts. They were awful, too narrow and one had a natural curve to the right and I couldn’t understand why I found turning left so difficult until the skate drifted away from me one day as I was changing in a neat arc. Rubbish.

Where did your nick name come from?
David Bowie! The king of personas and what a tune! I started off thinking I’d be Block n Roll Suicide, then opted for Sheroes but have settled on Rebel Rebel as it suits me the best! It sort of cancels itself out and as I’m in a league full of rebels to not be rebellious is surely the real rebellion. Oh, and my face is often a mess.

What is your favourite part about being a Roller girl?
Skating FAST, my brilliant leaguemates and being part of the global derby community, seeing my body as something strong and useful, the endorphins and elation when the line-up is tight and strategies work!

Any top tips for up and coming Derby Superstars?
Be prepared to muck in and help behind the scenes. Leagues are skater-run and depend upon everyone doing their bit so to get the most from your league by putting something in and help more awesome happen!
