Roller Derby Ref – Rollosapien

Derby Name:
Rollosapien

Derby Team:
The Inhuman League and Hulls Angels Roller Dames

Occupation:
Mature Student at Hull University Studying Zoology

How long have you been skating?
11 months

Why did you get involved in roller derby?
I was introduced to roller derby when my girlfriend started to play for Hulls Angels Roller Dames. I would walk her to practice as it was dark and she had to pass an unsavoury part of town and I would help her and there with some very amateur NSO’ing. After speaking to the Head coach Benni Lugosi one night in the pub after practise I decided to buy some skate and join the team’s zebra crew. After 8 weeks I passed my minimum skills and began to attend training with The Inhuman League, a men’s roller derby team based in Sheffield.

How often do you practice?
3 times a week with Hulls Angels Roller Dames and once a week for The Inhuman League.

What Pads do you use?
Really basic, no fear elbow pads, Anarchy knee pads and no fear wrist guards.

What Helmet do you use?
I use a basic black no fear helmet.

What skates do you use?
My skates are Havoc Anarchy

What were your first pair of skates?
Havoc Anarchy

Where did your nick name come from?
My nick name comes from a play on Homo- sapien, I just changed the Homo for Rollo and my number 1859 is the year that Charles Darwin’s ‘The Origin of Species’ was published. I’m a bit of a science geek.

What is your favourite part about playing Roller Derby?
My favourite part about playing roller derby is without a doubt the friends that I have made, both skating for Hulls Angels Roller Dames and The Inhuman League, not to mention my massive bromance with Roller Polar Bear (also of Hulls Angels Roller Dames and The Inhuman League). With TIL I have had the chance to skate in the first ever Men’s European championships and skate against the New York Shock Exchange, all in my first year in the sport.

Any top tips for up and coming Derby Superstars?
Skate hard and trust your team mates. Try and experience all aspects of the game, I play, ref and on occasion bench and the more well-rounded your knowledge and experience is the better you will become.
