Roller Derby Skater – Scissorkick
Derby Name:
Scissorkick
Derby Team:
Hulls Angels Roller Dames
Occupation:
Student support worker
How long have you been skating?
Almost two years, and I want to do a lot more.
Why did you get involved in roller derby?
My best friend Betty Banzai started the team in the beginning, and she asked if I wanted to watch a session to see what happens. I loved what I saw!
How often do you practice?
Twice a week, Tuesdays and Saturdays.
What Pads do you use?
Smiths scabs on my knees, triple 8 elbow pads and (very worn out) SFR wrist guards.
What Helmet do you use?
Triple 8, with a yellow smiley face on the front
What skates do you use?
Just bought reidell 3’s which are really comfortable. I add on rollerbones wheels too.
What were your first pair of skates?
Viper’s which ended up so huge I had to wear hiking socks as well to stop myself slipping around. The insides have worn down to the metal fittings which have rusted because of my hard working feet. But I can’t get rid of them.
Where did your nickname come from?
I have a tattoo of a pair of scissors, and the idea came from that.
What is your favourite part about being a Roller girl?
That I get to enjoy exercise with my friends, and all the fantastic social stuff we do as well (including lots of fancy dress).
Any top tips for up and coming Derby Superstars?
Enjoy it, every step of the way! I gave myself a lot of pressure to aspire to the best in the team, and stressed myself out when I could not do a drill/get points as jammer. If you enjoy it you will have fun in the process and reach your goals a lot quicker. Snip Snip!
