Derby Name:
Starlite XS

Derby Team: The Rapscallion Rollers

Occupation: Full time mother of two

How long have you been skating? Been skating with the league for 4 months, but have always been on wheels – I skateboard and used to do aggressive rollerblading.

Why did you get involved in roller derby? I’ve always wanted to have a go, it seemed like the perfect sport for me – my calling as it were. When the new team “Rapscallion Rollers” (affiliated with CRD) started up in my home town, I was all over it!

How often do you practice? Between 1 and 3 times a week for a couple of hours each time.

What Pads do you use? TSG Force 3 kneepads, Smith Scabs knee gaskets and Protec elbows and wristies.

What Helmet do you use? TSG

What skates do you use? Sure Grip

What were your first pair of skates? Fisher price adjustables! Derby skates, what I’m wearing now – Sure Grips.

Where did your nick name come from? My name has so many connotations to it. Firstly an old nickname of mine was Jesstar. It’s a play on the hit West End musical Starlight Express, but is spelt “lite” because I drink a lot of Coca Cola Lite (Diet Coke). The XS bit is extra small (cos I’m a little shrinky dink short arse) and I do everything to excess, which also brings my number in to play – number 2 XS!

What is your favourite part about being a Roller girl? The adrenaline of skating fast and hitting hard! It’s really nice to get back into competitive sport (I used to compete internationally at Surf Life Saving) and the social is fab. I’ve met so many nice people and new friends in the short space of time that I’ve been rolling.

Any top tips for up and coming Derby Superstars? Practice practice practice. Get fit and most of all, don’t let fear get in your way!
